TALC

Talc is an aqueous magnesium silicate mineral and has the composition expressed by the theoretical formula Mg3Si4O10 (OH) 14. The composition of talc ore in commercial terms can never reach the theoretical composition and there are very important chemical differences between talc ores being operated. Its hardness is 1 (1 – 1.5) and it is the softest mineral. Since it is slippery, it feels like soap when touched by hand. Its specific density is 2.58 – 2.83 gr / cm3. It is usually found with talcified tremolite, chlorite, dolomite, magnesite, micas, quartz, calcite, diopsite, anthophyllite and serpentine. These minerals can only be determined by XRF. It is not affected by acids, hardens at high temperatures and turns into enstatite and amorphous silica at 800 – 860 ° C.
Properties such as whiteness, softness, shape (fiber or leaf), brightness, lubricity, lubrication ability, electrical and thermal insulation, specific temperature and temperature resistance are sought in industrial talc. Sulfur, sulfate minerals, Fe and Mn oxides in talc reduce the quality of talc. Raw material containing at least 35% talc and some Fe, Mg, Ca carbonate is called “soapstone”. Talk with high talc content, cryptocrystalline, massive appearance, containing 1.5% CaO, 1.5% iron oxides and 4% A12O3 is called “steatite (massive talc)”.
