BARITE

Barite is a mineral in the composition of BaSO4. In its pure form it contains 65.7% BaO and 34.3% SO3. It has an opaque or transparent appearance. Its color is usually white. It may turn red and brown due to the iron entering its composition, and red, black, yellow or blue due to carbon compounds. It is mostly glassy or oily luster.Barite is the heaviest of the non-metallic minerals. Its specific gravity varies between 4.3-4.6, its hardness is between 2.5 and 3.5. Its melting point is 1580 ° C. Barite has specific gravity from calcite and does not react to dilute HCl, it is distinguished from quartz by its low hardness and easy brittleness. Its line color is white. 80% of barite used in the world is consumed in the oil industry (oil drilling). Barite is also used as an additive in paper, canvas, floor linoleum, rubber and ebonite industries. Barite is used as an inert material in the production of pesticides in order to increase the brightness in the glass industry, in the production of lenses and TV tubes, in the plastic industry, and in the production of pesticides. One of the important usage areas of barite is the paint industry. It is used as a whitening pigment and thinner in oil paint production.
